Case Studies

Ensuring Competitiveness – The chairman of the board for a publicly traded multi-national electronics company felt his company was not optimizing transportation.  He feared his firm was losing competitive advantage in his highly competitive market place.  TSL reviewed the situation and helped implement recommendations that dramatically improved cost effectiveness and service levels.  The results were measurable and sustainable.  The company feels their logistics operation is now an asset instead of a liability.

Acquisition and Transportation –  A major manufacturer acquired a firm with a complementary product line in a nearby location but with completely different freight carriers.  The logistics executive wondered: Is the acquired company getting good pricing?  Could our freight be combined to save money?  How?  Transport Solutions conducted a quick comparative analysis of costs and services between the acquisition and the new parent firm –”clearly and quickly” – and the client chose the best providers.

Far flung Operations and Cross-Cultural Differences –  A U.S. company had multiple manufacturing operations in S.E. Asia but suspected their shipping costs were too high.  The transportation director called in Transport Solutions.  After implementing a few TSL recommendations—consolidation and adjusting the lanes they used—the company saved literally $100,000 or more per month.  That set the tone for credibility with the Asian management team. Working together with Transport Solutions, the company then issued the RFQ that saved the company $2 million on just one year’s freight.  And no one lost face.

Complex, Worldwide Distribution –  A group of multi-national manufacturers ship vast quantities of high-value products largely from Asian manufacturing sites to distribution centers throughout the U.S. and Europe, as well as within Asia Pacific.  They wanted to be sure they were getting the best transportation rates and service.  Transport Solutions devised a sophisticated, global bidding process, including ground, ocean and air transportation bidders. Now, each client company chooses the best transportation mix for their individual needs.

Multiple Divisions – A company with four operating divisions made an acquisition that would involve realignments ending up with seven divisions.  Each division operated mostly autonomously, but internal politics about resources were preventing them from leveraging each other’s volume.  TSL provided the unbiased means of pulling each division’s transportation requirements together and helped devise a method to select appropriate transport providers.  All divisions, large and small, bought into the plan and obtained clear, measurable benefits.

What Our Clients Say About Transport Solutions LLC

“It’s the control and peace of mind knowing that I’ve got people who commit to an immense amount of detail and make sure we’re doing it right.”

Sr. manager of international logistics, telecommunications equipment manufacturer
“I was wearing many hats and had overall responsibility for most of my companies’ support functions with transportation being a new area for me. I had to rely on someone to help me sort out our current logistics situation and develop/implement a strategic direction. Phil (Ramsdale) did that for me! We did an RFQ last year, and what TSL did for me was to save $2 million on just one year’s freight.”
Director of transportation and compliance, large high-tech manufacturer
“Transport Solutions was able to help us accomplish significant improvements in all facets of our transport logistics function. They replicated the success achieved with my previous company. I would recommend them to companies that are serious about excellence in transport logistics.”
President, large sporting goods company
Transport Solutions “allows me to work without internal staff where otherwise I’d have to hire 3-4 highly trained staff and maintain them as fixed staff. In the end, I probably spend at most one quarter of what I’d have to spend on internal staff, and I get a deeper level of experience and I get a better business mentality than I would otherwise.”
Sr. director of worldwide logistics, computer peripherals manufacturer
“TSL’s breadth and depth of knowledge of the transportation business is invaluable to companies evaluating their transportation networks.”
Director of global logistics, telecom equipment firm
“I like the format, the way they run their bids, establish timelines, and provide full information to work on and bid against using the actual activity levels. I like the fact that there is a decision going to be made. TSL does a very, very good job of helping customers rationalize their distribution footprint. Along with that, they help them rationalize and get to the best value in selecting transportation services and companies to support that footprint. For instance, they are very good at looking at transportation patterns in and out of different geographic options”
Consulting company partner and former freight company executive
“TSL gives us the info we want, when we want it, the way we want to see it; it’s very complicated, expert-type analysis and we don’t have to hire internal resources to do it. I save money by bringing in an expert and figuring what we want, clearly; then move on. I’m not having to pay an additional burden for someone who’s useful 20% of the time. I call them and tell him what we want…then they go do it and come back with the answers. They quickly find the problems, fix things, and offer more information faster and at a much higher level of professionalism than I could do it internally. They do what you want a consultant to do.

“Most people who posture themselves as consultants in this area are secretly paid agents of the suppliers. If someone comes to your office and says they are going to help you get a good freight program, they will REALLY drive you to the carrier who’s paying them! They earn money from both sides. TSL does absolutely the opposite side of that—they are working in your company’s interest, they are ethical, and they have a real interest in driving value because they want ongoing work and have a reputation to uphold.”
